TransitioningPrinters

Each user can configure their new Windows95 computer to print to any networked Hewlett-Packard printer in the MSC. The newer model printers (HP LaserJet models 4 & 5) can simultaneously handle print requests from Robin Hood (for WordPerfect, email, and financial reports) over a non-network connection and from the new networked desktop computers. However, the older model printers can only listen to one source (network or non-network) at a time. This is problematic in that WordPerfect-based programs on Robin Hood (namely word processing and email) cannot be printed over the network. Consequently, during the transition, it will be neccesary to have some changes in where your printing occurs for different tasks. The impact will be as follows (this plan is very subject to change--check back for updates):

Jordan - Effective June 24

All printing from the Windows95 computers and the existing Macintosh computer will be set to print to the laser printer inside room 223I. For at least the next few months, printing from Robin Hood will continue to occur on the printer under the clock in SPO West. After we transition word processing and email off of Robin Hood, printing of database reports remaining on Robin Hood could be redirected to the printer in room 223I.

SCONA - Effective June 24

All printing from the Windows95 computers, the existing WindowsNT computer and Robin Hood will be set to print to the laser printer located near Joy.

OPAS - Effective June 26

All printing from the Windows95 computers will be directed to a new laser printer within the OPAS area which will take the place of the existing Apple LaserWriter printer outside of room 223C. This printer will also support the existing Macintosh computers in that area. The Apple printer can be relocated to Print 'N' Copy. All printing from Robin Hood will continue to occur on the printer under the clock in SPO West until July 10 when printing from Robin Hood will be re-directed to the new printer. The old SPO West printer will be needed temporarily in SPO East.

SPO West - Effective Early August

In early August, the printer under the clock in SPO West will be moved to SPO East. Printing by Peggy and Jordan staff from Robin Hood can be directed to either the new OPAS printer or the existing SCONA printer. It is not yet determined if the SPO West printer will return to its current location at the end of August to serve student access computers that may be placed in SPO West, or if its move to SPO East will be permanent.

SPO East - Effective June 27

Here's where it gets tricky! Based on the training sequence and location of users in the SPO East area, here is the current plan that will affect at least 14 staff members:

On June 27 a new printer will be temporarily placed on the Services Island to accept network-based print jobs from Karen, Deryle, Charlotte, Barbara, Stephanie, Michelle, Penny and Stephen's new Windows95 computers. Dave, Dean, Ramona and Kevin can print to the printer by Nancy (Sorry, Nancy and Kathy). The last of these staff members will be getting initial training on July 3.

On July 15, the existing Services Island printer will be switched to accept print jobs from the network. At that time, all printing of word processing documents and email from Robin Hood will be redirected from that printer to the printer by Charlotte. The temporary new printer will be relocated in the Director's Office.

Nancy and Dawn will be trained on July 9. All printing by Nancy will be to her existing printer (it can handle all types of connections (Windows95, Robin Hood and Macintosh) simultaneously. Dawn (like the other SPO East staff around her) be printing from word processing and email on Robin Hood to the printer by Charlotte. Printing from Windows95 will be sent to the Services Island printer. For all SPO East staff, database reports from Robin Hood (such as Fund Accounting Query) can be directed to any of the printers according to personal preference.

In early August Microsoft Word and the new email system should be well in use. At that time the printer by Charlotte will be switched over to accept network-based printing, relieving the load from the printer by Nancy and on the Island. The few staff still transitioning away from word processing and email on Robin Hood can still print to the printer by Nancy and the printer on the Services Island that has been moved from SPO West.

By the end of August it is expected that need for the second printer on the Island to print from Robin Hood will be minimal so it will be switched to accept network-based print jobs. It is expected by the end of the summer that another printer will be added near the professional development library in SPO East to better serve users in the corner.

Director's Office - Effective July 15

A new printer (used temporarily in the preceding weeks on the Services Island) will be placed temporarily in the Director's Office to accept network-based print jobs. Eventually, a different new printer designated for that area will be installed (currently being purchased). The printer that has been moved to Director's Office from SPO East will ultimately be placed in Betty Slenk's office to print her reports and thank you letters for contributors.
