MSC Computer Operations

Portable Resources Description


The following portable resources are regulated by the MSC Policy for Usage of Portable Technology Resources approved by the MSC Council. A Resource Request Form must be submitted to use these resources.

Notebook Computers

Two IBM ThinkPad notebook computers are available for MSC use. They feature an 800MB hard disk and the Windows95 operating system. They contain the same basic software as the desktop PCs in the Computer Lab including Microsoft Office and Netscape. Complete with a convenient carrying case with shoulder strap, the notebook computers also are equipped with a ethernet network card and optional 28.8K modem. One unit has an internal 3.5" diskkette drive. The other has an internal CD-ROM drive with an attachable external 3.5" diskette drive.

Video Projection Unit

A Proxima 5100 video projection unit is available for MSC use. This resource features two computer video connections and two RGB connections that can be attached to VCRs or video cameras, and small speaker. This resource has been successfully used for on-the-road development presentations used for PowerPoint presentations also using the a portable notebook computer, for video program presentations, and can be used everywhere from small rooms to MSC Rudder Theatre with reasonable lighting control. The unit is provided in a protective case with wheels and extendable handle and includes remote controls and cables for connection to one PCs or Macintosh computers and one VCR. Also included is a 3-button wireless radio mouse that enable users to present without having to sit by the computer.

Digital Camera

A Kodak digital camera with flash is available for MSC use. Up to 48 pictures can be taken without connecting to a computer to download images for permanent storage. A computer in the lab is equipped for quick download. A portable notebook computer can also be configured for download and storage of images when being used outside the MSC.

Zip Disks

A 100MB Iomega Zip disk drive with diskettes is available for MSC use. When a 3.5" diskette with a maximum storage capacity of 1.44MB is not enough for transferring data to a service agency such as the Texas A&M Printing Center, the Zip disk can be used. If the receiving agency already has a Zip drive (as does the Texas A&M Printing Center), you need only carry the pocket-sized diskette to them after copying your files onto it.

VCR

A Video Cassette Recorder is available for MSC use. This hi-fi VHS tape record and playback unit can be easily connected to both the Video Projection Unit and the Stereo sound system for video presentations to large audiences.

Stereo and Speakers

The stereo amplifier with speakers is available for MSC use. Amplifier output is 100 watts per channel with connector for subwoofer (not included). This sound system can be easily connected to the VCR for presentations to large audiences. The system includes a 3-disk CD player, AM/FM radio and dual-cassette tape deck that can be used for background music for an event. Two microphone inputs enable it to also be used as a PA system (microphones not incuded at this time).
